REAL HOPE

REAL HOPE

So Antonin Scalia is gone.

Am I sorry. No. He was an obnoxious man who should have lived and died in the thirteenth century. He was narrow-minded, bigoted, hateful, and out of step with the world we live in.

Watching the Republicans spew their hatred of President Obama during their debate, using Scalia’s death as a platform, was not surprising. But it does show the kind of men that are running for the highest office in this country. These small-mind, misogynistic, hypocrites are asking you to vote for their hateful agenda so we can all join Scalia’s thirteen century mindset. Crusades and all.

The President continues to try to do his job, and Congress continues to have the single goal of not doing theirs. Republicans do not want Barack Obama  to replace Scalia because they know whomever he chooses is going to be someone who probably has a liberal tilt.

Well, hell, it’s about time. I, for one, have no desire to live in a thirteen century world. I want to live in a world where women have equal rights and can make choices about their own bodies, where religion is a private affair, and where the rich don’t make  decisions on how to run our country.

Here’s what Senator Elizabeth Warren had to say:

“The sudden death of Justice Scalia creates an immediate vacancy on the most important court in the United States.

Senator McConnell is right that the American people should have a voice in the selection of the next Supreme Court justice. In fact, they did — when President Obama won the 2012 election by five million votes.

Article II Section 2 of the Constitution says the President of the United States nominates justices to the Supreme Court, with the advice and consent of the Senate. I can’t find a clause that says ‘…except when there’s a year left in the term of a Democratic President.’

Senate Republicans took an oath just like Senate Democrats did. Abandoning the duties they swore to uphold would threaten both the Constitution and our democracy itself. It would also prove that all the Republican talk about loving the Constitution is just that — empty talk.

Elizabeth Warren said it all. What a woman.

Washington politicians and U.S. healthcare executives are conspiring in a sinister cost-cutting scheme to legalize selective euthanasia for the seriously ill and dying, primarily for the poor and powerless.

If secret legislation can slip through the quagmire of Congress, it will diminish the annual deficit by billions, if not trillions; catapult corporate healthcare profits; and get an unpopular President re-elected.

What the powerbrokers don’t anticipate is an in-your-face, militant seniors advocacy group becoming suspicious and hires an aggressive, semi-retired investigative journalist to expose the behind-the scenes manipulations.

Fascism Lurks In The Open

 Fascism Lurks In The Open

I watched the last Republican debate on Thursday, as I have all of them. I don’t trust social media, on-line publications, or even the newspapers I read to report an event anymore. There’s way too much misinformation out there. I choose to witness things that are happening, if at all possible. How else can I make important decisions?

And this presidential election is drastically important. It could be a tipping point in so many areas—not only for the survival of Democracy, but the survival of the human race.

Yes, that’s how important it is.

Although I’ve never been a fan of Megyn Kelly, I have to say, she solidly stood her ground against that misogynist group of men. Ted Cruz tried all but punching her out to ruffle her and it did no good. She was ready for them and she didn’t give in.

Not once.

Cruz at one point even threatened to pull a Trump and walk out. We all knew he was too self-serving for that.  Nothing but an empty threat. I’ll even bet Trump regretted not being there—narcissist that he is.

You might guess that I’m definitely not a fan of Fox News, but they are starting to learn how to conduct this kind of event.  Along with their questions, they showed the audience TV clips where these candidates actually changed positions on issues with the ease of a snake slithering through the forest. The videos went back and forth with what these men said they “believed” at any given time. Their rhetoric changed with the mood of each crowd. And when faced with their lies, they merely lied some more.

To think I thought Mitt Romney was awful.

The fact that Donald Trump tried to bully the event by not being there—who can get along without The Donald—really backfired. For a bunch of politicians pandering to extremists, these men had more of an actual debate without all the ridiculous Trump facial expressions and speech patterns that reveal nothing of substance.

Face it! Donald trump is a fascist, and so is Ted Cruz. They make no bones about it. If we’re not careful, this country could end up in real trouble.

Trump and Cruz parrot Hitler and Mussolini—right down to the gestures and hate-filled speech designed to rile people who hate Blacks, Jews, Muslims, Mexicans …  anyone not Christian. If you are lily-white, a “religious” fanatic, they are seeking your support and your vote. And I’m sure you will give it to them.

Voting is the only key to stopping them. Every one of us has to get to the polls and vote or these men, or people like them could come into real power and lead us to total destruction.

Think about it.

If there is a Cruz or a Trump in the White House, there will be fighting in the streets, mass killings the like of which we have not seen since the Civil War.

Our country is in real danger. For those of you who think these men are merely clowns—forget it! None of the antics of Trump or Cruz are amusing or funny. These men are not buffoons—they mean business.

Make no mistake. They are a real threat to you and our democracy.

WE THE PEOPLE …

picture corporations rule

Donald Trump is an idiot. Ted Cruz is an idiot. Yet they are the two Republican leaders in the polls in the race for the Republican nomination for president.

We call Donald Trump a fool, buffoon, entertainer. Ted Cruz, likens himself to a messenger from God.

Make no mistake, these are calculating, evil men. We need to take them very seriously.

Donald Trump talks about using nuclear weapons and sending more soldiers to war when he’s never spent a day in the military. His money shields him from pretty much anything you have to go through to survive.

This “buffoon” thinks Mexicans are rapists, all Muslims are terrorists. He would have nothing to do with Iran or any other country that didn’t do exactly as he demands.

Don’t be fooled. He’s not joking with you, and he’s getting you to listen to him spout Fascism.

Ted Cruz makes negative remarks about New Yorkers and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s wants you to believe that liberals and, of course, the Jews, who are all very rich, are causing the decline of America. Well, here’s a short list of “New York values:”

Carnegie Hall

Metropolitan Opera

Lincoln Center

MOMA

Whitney Museum

Guggenheim Museum

Broadway

Off Broadway

You might not care about any of these places, but they are representative of American values to the rest of the world.

And let’s remember that maybe the most important thing about New York is its people, its fantastic diversity.  Walking in the city, you will see not only every culture, but every income level represented.

Having been raised there, I can say that they get along with each other pretty damn well.

And just to join the chorus of those who don’t believe Ted Cruz is even eligible—being a natural born citizen—to run for the office of the presidency.

I say: A leading Birther gets smacked with Karma.

Both of these men tout fascism and hatred and distrust. Why would any country leader want to sit down and talk to them?

Can you imagine Donald Trump, who seems to hate anyone who is not an American, trying to talk to people around this diverse world we live in?

Remember, these men who tout fascism, would represent our county. If this means nothing to you, read about Germany, Italy, and Spain in 1930-40.

And as for the rest of the Republican candidates running for President, most are trying to eliminate Social Security, healthcare, food stamps, children’s assistance programs, money for our veterans, and any other socially responsible program that exists. Where will that money go to? To fund the military-industrial complex.

If we’re not very careful with whom we put in office, we could be the starving immigrants running to Canada … maybe even Mexico.

A NEW WORLD

Pic Dystopiia

                                            A NEW WORLD

Now that 2016 is here, it’s time to view the world not as it was, or what we might want it to be—but what it has become.

Every person on our planet must finally open their eyes to climate change and actively protect Mother Earth so life in our world can survive. Climate change is not a fictional concept or a science fiction fantasy. It is our now reality.

Some say it’s too late.

But with action, maybe we can slow down some of the devastation and hope that enlightened humans will find ways to off set some of the worst damage to our home.

We have to listen.

Maybe the destruction can’t be reversed, but maybe we can take the necessary steps to cope with it and hope to survive.

Renewable energy is there for us and has been for a long time. Now we have to tuck moneyed interests aside and try to save life on earth.

All of us have to stop murdering animals. To the people who kill other living beings for sport—you are not conservationists, you are murderers. That you see no value in other beings is the kind of fallacy that will destroy all humans as well. We cannot afford to act solely as individuals. Every one of us is woven into a continuum of life. We belong to each other.

All living things matter.

Stop destroying plant life for commercial gain. The forests are not only beautiful, they give you the air you breathe. If you think we can somehow manufacture air to survive—forget it.

Forget it!

Without the oxygen the forests and plant life provide, we no longer exist. Earth will become a dead rock among the lifeless gazillions floating in the vastness of an endless universe.

Human carnage.

When will we learn to live in peace? When will we stop trying to dominate each other with our religions, our land grabs, our energy dominance, our political differences.

Keep in mind that the primary elections are this spring—it’s time to weed out the flat earth society members. We have to leave the past behind, think about our tomorrows.

Vote!

The internet has shown every one of us what the whole world is like in an instant. It’s not a pretty picture.

Do we need to crumble and totally fall apart before we get the message?

It’s simple:

We have to care about what happens across the world—we are wrapped around each other in one way or another. We are all a part of the wheel of life.

We can make 2016 a real beginning.

Work for universal harmony, peace, and respect for every life form.

We can make every year a HAPPY NEW YEAR

Gratitude And Responsibility

Pic. We not me

This has been one of the happiest years of my life. So many things have been so right—whether it is writing or art—things seemed to have unfolded to bring tremendous joy into my life. I am really happy.

Yet I can’t ignore the sadness and hatred all around me.

Hatred: it seems to be exploding everywhere around the globe, and the ugly rebirth of fascism in our own country is beyond distressing and alarming.

No matter which is our political party, how can any of us tolerate the things that are being thrown at us every single day, and yet, be silent. This is exactly the way it was when Hitler was starting his rise to power.

What is wrong with us as a country if we can tolerate and seriously consider the filth and hatred coming out of the mouths of our politicians?

And Donald Trump? A “physically healthy” war monger who received medical deferments to stay out of the military, is willing to send our men and women to their deaths without blinking an eye.

Do you honestly think this narcissist, this fascist, this ignorant fool and others like him will make our country safe?

Facisim will not make us safe.

If our planet is not safe—whether it is from global warming, the extinction of animal and plant life, or the proliferation of war and hatred—we are all in jeopardy.

Fear is the enemy and there is no place to hide.

America is part of a global community.  In that spirit of cooperation, as the Canadians have demonstrated, we have to care that people are displaced from their homes and thrown out into nothingness.

The Syrians are our brothers and sisters—we have to care that they will die if we do not help them.

It is time to understand and revel in what it means to be human—it is a heavy responsibility, but a joyous one, as well.

As 2015 ends, I’m hopeful that sanity will win and we will turn away from the hatred and ugliness that is trying to poison all of us—instead, recognize the beauty that makes us all one.

A CHEESE DAY

Pic. THEKILLING VOTE BP Event

YESTERDAY AT BOOK PASSAGE– CORTE MADERA

A friend’s bright little boy, wise beyond his years, always called his happiest days, cheese days. To him those days were times when everything turned out the way he wanted—he had all the toys or books he wanted, played with many friends—when  he could smile and smile and smile.

What can I say: the kid loved cheese and would have eaten it all the time if his parents had let him.

Well, yesterday was that kind of day for me and my love, J. J. Lamb.

We were having a book event at Book Passage in Corte Madera for our latest  book, THE KILLING VOTE.

And yes, it was an exciting thing, but I was worried that no one would come to hear us—especially during  this season when we are all too busy for events like this.

On a scale of 1 to 10, our big moment was maybe a minus 2 for other people.

When we sent out notices of the upcoming launch, response after response told of seasonal family visits and other things that were far more important than anything we were offering. And although it was disappointing, it was really understandable.

As the day grew closer and closer for our Book Passage event, all I could see was J.J. and I talking to an empty room. Well, I knew some dear friends would come. But they’d heard about the book ad nauseum.

But yesterday, the day of the event, was amazing!

People we hadn’t seen in years came and other new, wonderful people gave up their time to hear two writers try to tell what they consider to be an important story.

We love every one of those people for giving us a huge CHEESE DAY!

Lest you think our heads have swelled—here  is a description of the event by one in the audience:

The audience at Book Passage decided, unanimously, not to make any noise and allow the authors to nap in peace.  They held their questions until the authors were awake 45 minutes later. They all read the books they had purchased during the nap and as a result, came up with some interesting questions. The cookies were excellent.  Book Passage has decided to build in nap time for future events when the participants are older than 65.  Audience members of all ages will be invited to nap along with the special guests should they choose to do so. Meditating during presentations is also permitted. Contemplation may be allowed if navels remain covered;-)

WHO WE ARE

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Emma Lazarus – 1883

These welcoming words are emblazoned on the pedestal of The Statue of Liberty, Like a shinning star, Liberty remains the symbol that displays the open heart of the American people in this wonderful land of ours.

For hundreds of years our country has become the home of immigrants from around the world. It’s something to be proud of and it reflects the true grandeur of the American people. If you are not of the indigenous peoples, then you, too, are an immigrant. We are all immigrants.

It’s never been easy. We have a history of forced immigration for African Americans, and when Irish, Scottish, Italian, Asian, Mexican, and many more ethnic groups came to our land, they were surrounded by racism and bigotry.  Many still continue to treat newcomers with that same cruelty and hatred.

Yes, our country still has racists, white supremacists, members of the KKK, and other American groups that claim to be patriots, yet they take no shame in murdering those who disagree with them. Americans, yet they murder. Right here in our own land.

Like it or not, these are our people, too.

Also, a part of our landscape is an ultra conservative political movement. They damn women and their right to reproductive freedom, and that’s not the half of it, riding on their backs are large groups of religious bigots who march under the flag of hatred. They think they have no connection to the suffering of others, not only in this country, but anywhere else in the world. Fear is what drives this herd of humanity that can’t seem to accept new, different ideas or cultures.

These are our people, too.

Blind bigotry—hatred takes a long, hard time to lessen. But sooner or later, from generation to generation, more people begin to realize that we are all one and that every ethnic group in this country contributes something wonderful to every one of us. Whether it’s art, music, science, language, technology, philosophy—each individual sooner or later becomes a part of this wonderful fabric called America.

Open up your hearts! It’s the American way.

“Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.”

Pic for Blog DARKNESS_edited-3

“Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.”

“The Sound of Silence.”  I loved that song Simon & Garfunkel once sang together. It says so much about people and their need for introspection. That need for space to think and breathe.

There’s something special about being in that solitary space—alone in the darkness with your thoughts—where you can listen to your mind speak to you, where you can know what you really think. A place where you can evaluate and ponder and dream.

That’s pretty much what it feels like to be a writer. In the silence, a single thought flashes through your mind and you build a whole world, maybe even a universe around it.

It can’t be only writers who do that.

Others must silently ask important questions. Who are we? What do we stand for? Why are we here?

Or are we too busy taking selfies, reflecting images of our own empty faces, showing off our newest clothes, drooling over all the glitter of the celebrities around us, that we don’t bother to question our own lives or anything real any longer?

Do we only live vicariously in others, in their dreams?

Doesn’t that make you sad? It makes me very sad because our world of reason, caring, learning is being slowly deconstructed right under our noses. We can no longer hear our inner voice—the voice that brings understanding about life and its meaning.

Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.

Today I see a new kind of darkness, one where we don’t learn and pass on inner wisdom. Instead, it’s a kind of darkness filled with ignorance and fear.

Middle Ages-like-darkness.

A darkness where we’re so suspicious of people we have to carry guns. The kind of darkness that screams hatred of others—black, yellow, red, brown green, purple—anyone different than ourselves.

That kind of darkness is not my friend, and it’s not yours either.

In this current political turmoil, instead of finding substance, we find politicians vying strictly for attention and entertainment—not leadership. You know, the ones who make us laugh so we look at them and their empty thoughts.

We used to look to our future leaders for protection and honesty—now we get lies that are not challenged. By the time the truth surfaces, we’ve moved on to other lies—and on and on to the next sound bite of false information. And in this same treacherous loop, the news is no longer a bastion of responsible information, instead it passes on all those lies, along with the titillation we crave. We have become junkies, hooked on entertainment, hooked on buzz—not wisdom.

Whenever it was that we stopped paying attention to the real world, that’s when it became a place devoted to greed—greed that ravishes our deep inner desire for everything worth living for—our families, our homes, our friends, our land.

And now, all around us there are:

People talking without speaking,

People hearing without listening,

People writing songs that voices never share…

WE ARE WOMEN HEAR US ROAR

“This is it. This is our time, or it could be if we really want it. I stand here at a critical moment for us American women, as the largest voting bloc in the nation. I truly believe if we stand together and work together in this next year, we have a chance after more than two centuries to finally gain equality for women once and for all.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Patricia Arquette

Women have a real opportunity in this coming election to make their voices heard. This is not a time to speak softly. This is a time for women to pool their unrest and make everyone realize that we are not going to take a back seat any longer just because we are women. No more. No way.

    How do we do it?

    We vote.

There’s a new movie about to be released called Suffragette. I haven’t seen it yet, but it is scheduled to open in the next week or two. I‘ve seen the previews and I can tell it’s something everyone needs to see. It will help us in our resolve to push ahead.

Women have fought, suffered, and died for our right to vote. At this point, voting is the only method that allows us complete equality—and—an avenue to fight back.

How many elections have you voted in? How many have you missed voting? How many times have you avoided doing the one thing that can give you the power to be heard?

Many non-voters claim: We can’t change anything. It’s only one vote. Everything is rigged, or fixed against us. Does it even matter?

Yes. It does matter. Think about those statements—none of them make any sense.

Collectively, women are a powerhouse bloc of votes. Together we can make things happen. Things could change. People could change—for the better. There are many, many men who feel as we do. Who think of women as equals. They are disgusted with out lack of equality. They are as frustrated as we are. They will stand by us.

Today, there’s a drive to crush the voter. Across the country, local governments in many states are making it harder and harder for people to vote or even register. They specifically target African-Americans because their votes could easily join the bloc of women voters and put an end to the massive inequality that exists in our country today. The people who want to crush the vote know the power it holds.

If you live in an area that is shutting down available places to register and vote—step up. Help others to get to the polls. The people who are trying to control us can’t win, if we don’t let them.

This is the right moment where the dynamics of the presidential election can force a much broader discussion of the candidates. It will be easier to see who deserves our vote.  When we vote, we win

Remember. This is our time. There is no better moment to step up to the challenge to bring into office those who really care and are not blinded by bigotry, bias, and stupidity.

    Plan for it.

    Encourage others to do it.

    VOTE!

“Ambition, greed, hypocrisy—and murder. Bette and JJ Lamb have taken the battle over medical care and fashioned a droll, lightning-paced political thriller with more plot twists than Washington has scoundrels. I thought of the great Ross Thomas as I hummed through the pages. Prepare to laugh–and get ripping mad.”

WOMEN: VOTE THESE MEN DOWN & OUT.

Blog Feminism#3_edited-1

It’s long past time for women to get their hackles up over the way we are being treated. We are not children who need to led—by men
Is it our fault?
Maybe.
We have given men a free pass, allowing them to shout their stupidity and blatant ignorance about women, about who we are and what we want. Their trash-talk seems to be their primary modi operandi and it’s blossoming everywhere, especially by the ultra conservative segment of the Republican Party.
The mind-numbing noise is overwhelming, and sadly it could begin to influence a lot of the populace, just by hearing the same lies over and over.
It’s time for women everywhere to put a stop to it.
What happened to the moderate, progressive wing of the GOP? There used to be one. If it was still viable, surely members would be vocally getting into the face of this particularly disgusting group of conservatives who grab the headlines every day.
This pack of offensive conservatives is made up of nasty, lying, disgusting men (with the exception of Carly Fiorina, who is obviously in drag—I refuse to believe she’s a woman) who are not only disrespectful to the Presidency, the Supreme Court, the Constitution of the United States, they are disrespectful to women. In fact, they are disrespectful to anyone who disagrees with them.
They mouth off a lot about the Constitution—at the drop of a hat. But they haven’t a clue about separation of church and state.
Aren’t you tired of them donning the cloak of religion to try to give the appearance of nobility and purpose?
It’s not working.
These arrogant loudmouths should be cut from the herd. Make no mistake; they are very, very dangerous. They don’t believe in government. They are out to destroy ours.
Women: I know that by nature we are basically nurturing individuals. We don’t like to stand up and fight. We’d much rather create something beautiful and lasting.   Sure there are women with different goals. But for the most part, we’d rather make love than war.
That’s just who we are.
Well, it’s time to lock up those traits—step up and become assertive, outspoken, ready to put down these misogynists. We can’t let them continue to tell us how to take care of our bodies, whether it’s with birth control or the choice of when and if we have children.
These same conservative Republican candidates have been trying to annihilate women’s services with false allegations against Planned Parenthood. They even had to admit finally, that Planned Parenthood had done nothing wrong.
Ouch! I’ll bet that hurt.
It’s not over. There’s always tomorrow when they can lie and cheat about something else. Because, face it, Planned Parenthood was never really their target.
We are. Women are their target. They want to control us
And I say to them: IF YOU DON’T HAVE A VAGINA, GET LOST!
We’re sick of you.
WOMEN: THERE IS POWER IN YOUR VOTE
VOTE THESE MEN DOWN & OUT.
